The WSET Level 1 Award in Beer provides a great introduction to the world of beer. Learning through sight, smell and taste, by taking this beer course, you'll become familiar with a range of beer styles and how they are made.
If you work with beer, you’ll be able to answer customer queries with confidence and provide helpful recommendations. If you’re learning for fun, you’ll feel inspired to explore new styles and know how to get the most out of every glass.
Upon completion, you’ll gain a globally recognised qualification and the knowledge to help you explore the world of beer in greater depth.
What you'll learn
- The main ingredients used to make beer - Malt (malted grains) and other sugar sources, water, hops, yeast
- The main production steps used to make beer - Malting, brewing
- The principles of successful beer storage - service and food pairing - beer storage and service: keeping beer fresh, glassware, pouring keg beer, opening and pouring bottled beer, service temperature - common beer faults: staling, light strike (skunking), bacterial infection
- Food and beer - Preferences, sensitivities, interactions, application and other considerations
- The characteristics of a range of key beer styles - Malt-driven styles: American or international pale lager, Munich helles, Blonde ale, Munich dunkel, Brown ale, Porter and stout, Barley wine - Hop-driven styles: Traditional Czech or German pilsner, Bitter, American pale ale, American IPA, Hazy IPA - Yeast driven styles: Weissbier, Dubbel, Tripel, Saison, Witbier - Sour styles: Berliner weisse, Geuze (gueuze)
WSET BURSARIES
WSET offers a bursary scheme which is designed to help potential students in the UK who would otherwise be unable to take a WSET qualification due to financial hardship. The Drinks Trust has been appointed to administer the WSET bursaries by offering free WSET courses through its Develop programme.

BEFORE YOU START
Please read the criteria and ensure you have all the documents you need before you begin your application as once you start the form you will not be able to exit and come back to it.
Please choose whether you’d like to attend an in-person class at WSET School London in Bermondsey Street – London SE1, or an online class, or choose a course with one of our regional WSET Approved Programme Providers before starting the application process.

- Must be resident of UK with NI number
- Must have UK bank account
- Must be able to provide up to 300 words about why this course will help their career
- No prior work experience needed
As a guideline for approval, applicants must have either less than £2,000 in their current and savings bank accounts or earning less than £26,000 per annum. The assessment will be made on a case-by-case basis taking into consideration exceptions to the above guideline. If you're in doubt about being eligible, please submit the application and the Develop Team will assess your case.
