I’m currently working at Trevibban Mill Vineyard in Cornwall, where I’m involved in the horticulture and viticulture on the estate, while also running tastings and serving as a sommelier, which I’m able to do due to the knowledge I acquired from completing my level 3 WSET. I’ve recently become involved in commercial sales for the winery, acquiring listings for restaurants and businesses, which I’m able to do given my overarching understanding of the vineyard and wine.
My role allows me to combine my horticultural background with my passion for wine, focusing on sustainable and regenerative practices whilst learning the practical art of vine growing. Alongside this, I spent last year working back a and forth in Italy for a biodynamic vineyard and I’ve recently planted my own mini vineyard of 50 Pinot Noir vines as a personal project to hone my craft further.
2. Could you tell us why you’ve decided to join in the industry or you’re considering to?
My journey into the wine industry came from a craving to merge creativity, sustainability, and my interest in horticulture and wine. Working as a Wine Sommelier sparked a deeper curiosity about wine production, and viticulture seemed to be the bridge between the two industries. I wanted to understand the story behind the wine from soil to bottle and be part of that process.
3. How did you hear about the Develop Programme?
I discovered the Develop Programme through industry networks, and after having conversations with my manager at the time, he kindly put me forward for it after recognising my passion for wine. It felt like the perfect opportunity to gain formal training and take the next step in my career by opening other avenues.
4. What course did you do and what interested you in the course?
I completed both WSET Level 2 and Level 3 courses, which I did within nine months! I was drawn to them because I wanted to learn more about the subject in a professional capacity, and I also wanted to build confidence in wine theory and tasting so that I could apply it to my career and broaden my opportunities. The structure and depth of the WSET courses were exactly what I needed to develop my role.
5. How did the course help your career?
The courses were a game-changer. They allowed me to continue working as a sommelier at The Scarlet Hotel in alongside the Develop Programme, which allowed me to build up my technical knowledge quickly and consolidate the things I was learning.
Since completing my courses, I’ve hosted private wine tastings for some huge companies, including Hello Magazine, and secured a hands-on role at Trevibban Mill. The course laid the foundation for my career, and without it I wouldn’t have had the opportunities that have come my way.
6. What would you say to someone interested in The Drinks Trust Develop programme?
I’d say absolutely go for it and don’t look back! It’s an incredible opportunity to invest in your future, whether you know nothing at all about wine or you’re looking to expand your understanding. The support In received was incredible, it’s a fantastic way to make new connections in the industry, and the experience can open doors you didn’t even know existed.
7. What’s your next step?
I’m focusing on continuing to learn all I can about sustainable and regenerative viticulture, both through my work and my own small vineyard. I would love to create a beautiful space with vines, flowers, vegetable gardens and lots of biodiversity to be enjoyed for workshops, experiences and learning.
I hope to do some travelling through our winter season and experience vineyard life in other climates and just continue championing environmentally conscious practices within the industry.
